Selecting a Babysitter - what to keep in mind and how to achieve peace of mind when away from baby

As parents, you love your family but sometimes you just need a little break! Whether for date night or late work night, you need a trusted babysitter to call to watch your kids. Choosing a babysitter can be quite a process. You don’t want to leave your kids with just anyone. When searching for a babysitter, there are a few things you will want to consider.

Ask for References

Before hiring a babysitter, it is important to check their references. Ask if they can provide a one or two references, ideally other families they babysit for, who can speak to their capabilities. If you have friends with kids, check with them if they have any recommended babysitters. They can share their experiences and recommend trusted babysitters with a good reputation.

Ask About Experience

It is important the babysitter you trust your children with has experience. It’s a good idea to check what their experience is with other children the same age as your own. A babysitter who has older children may not be prepared to look after a baby. Finding a babysitter with first aid training can give you peace in mind knowing that if there is an emergency, they are prepared to respond to it.

Do a Test Run

If you are on the fence about a babysitter or just need more reassurance, you can ask the babysitter to do a test run. Choose a day when you can leave for an hour and see how the kids and the babysitter work out. After an hour, check in and ask the sitter and your kids how it went. This is a good opportunity for you to see how the babysitter and your kids get along and pinpoint any potential weak spots.

Interview Questions

You will want to meet your babysitter before hiring them to watch your family. When they come for an interview, ask them questions to help you better understand who they are and their qualifications. You want to choose a babysitter who is not only experienced but is also a good fit for your family environment. Another important question is asking more specifically about the services they provide. Are they able to cook meals for the kids? Are they comfortable changing diapers? You want to be sure your babysitter is prepared to cover all the bases.

Trust your Gut

Sometimes when you meet people, you just know. Or on the other hand, you just know it was not meant to be. Use the interviews as an opportunity to get to know the babysitter’s skills and personality. Get a feel of how they work within your family dynamic. When you go out, you want to be sure your kids are safe and comfortable. With the right babysitter, you can get out of the house and enjoy your night worry-free.
